ICO proposes additional powers and penalties under Data Protection Act

The Information Commissioner has published a paper in which he sets out a case for changes to the Data Protection Act 1998, including additional powers to be granted to him and increased penalties for serious non-compliance. The proposed changes are likely to be of particular concern to organisations which process significant amounts of data, such as the NHS or telecoms companies. However, the Information Commissioner's Office has confirmed that at present the paper represents the Commissioner's wishlist and is not yet the subject of a consultation process.
