The dangers of online portrayals

If you fancy being risqué in MySpace beware-your next potential employer could be watching and making notes.

It is common practice for employers today to Google potential candidates and to check out other common websites such as Friends Reunited.

This led one PR company to query whether a candidate had lied on her CV. With another blogger it was shown she had been dismissed for blogging during work time-though of course some employers actually encourage this as a modern form of PR/recruitment advertising for graduates.

Not all information online is accurate-just as with any other press-so the safest approach for employers to take is to ask the job candidate/employee for an explanation and then take stock of the response instead of taking any hasty decision.

Further, employees do have the right of privacy and personal lives unless they impact on the workplace and this should be respected.

Cynical candidates might also reply that just as employers have skeletons to hide so do candidates and that candidates have as much right as business to engage in PR or spin.
