GLA revokes record number of gangmasters' licences
The Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA), which was set up in 2005 to protect the rights of workers in various industries, including agriculture and horticulture, has reported that in the first quarter of the 2008-2009 financial year, it has revoked a record 22 gangmasters' licences. The figure contrasts with the 15 licences revoked throughout the entire 2007-2008 financial year and is a result of the GLA's Operation Ajax, launched in April 2008 to tackle worker exploitation and abuse. The GLA claims that the figure sends "a resounding message to those who abuse their power and their workers [that] there is no hiding place".
