The UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has published a press release on Google's Streetview service, which enables users to view street-level photographs and take virtual tours of streetscapes. The ICO says that after publicity about vans collecting images of streets in preparation for the launch of the service, it had a further meeting with Google to understand the steps which Google was taking to address privacy concerns. In the press release, the ICO indicates that it is satisfied that Google is putting adequate safeguards in place to avoid any risk to individuals' privacy. The safeguards include the blurring of vehicle registration numbers and of the faces of anyone included in the Streetview images. There is also a mechanism by which individuals can report an image that causes them concern and request its removal. Further, images are not in real time, and there is a delay between taking the image and its publication, so that the service could not be used to make decisions about an individual's whereabouts.
